About The Beginner Birder

Hi, I’m Elli 👋 My mission is to help others take flight into the world of birdwatching—whether you're just starting out or whether you’re looking for tips to sharpen your skills.

For me, birdwatching is much more than just a hobby. It’s a chance to get outside, get some fresh air, and get connected with nature—one chirp at a time! I’ve loved birds all my life, but this year I decided to really “lean into” birding as a more serious endeavor.

So, welcome to The Beginner Birder! On this site, you’ll find beginner-friendly guides, tips to help your birding skills soar, and hopefully a few fun surprises along the way.

Here’s a taste:

🐦 Guides for Florida birding spots (and beyond!)

All that’s left to do is to grab your binoculars, and let’s wing it together!

Happy birding,

Elli

About me

I’m originally from England, home of some amazing wildlife. Around 10 years ago, I moved to Orlando in sunny Florida. The sun, lakes and ocean make Florida a great spot for year-round birding—so I feel very fortunate to be here!

There’s nothing I love more than jumping in the car bright and early on the weekend to visit a local state park or nature preserve.

The why

I was inspired by both of my parents. My dad always loved birds of prey, and when I was growing up my mum had a camera permanently set up in our guest bedroom, ready to grab a photo of the owl family nesting in the birdbox in our front garden!

My dad, Alan, recently passed away. When I was younger, we would often hike together and try to spot hawks and owls. So—despite being on opposite sides of the ocean for many years—I’d always felt connected to him when I was out in nature. The Beginner Birder is dedicated to him. He taught me the basics of birdwatching (how to be still and patient, how to use binoculars, how to identify birds, and much more) and I’ll be forever grateful.

For Dad <3
